In this business you often come across the doubters and the naysayers who believe PR is a mystical force wielded by conjurers of words and events. You find very little evidence they know about the ‘PR message’.
I’m not joking! From being told my service isn’t worth anything so make it cheaper and I’ll buy it, to being asked to just spin it, that’s what you do isn’t it; it’s amazing in this day and age that you can still encounter individuals who don’t understand communicating.
PR isn’t a special force with an army of magical soldiers ready and waiting to deploy whimsical communication solutions. PR is simply about communicating, any form of communicating can be classed as a PR message. How you interact with your neighbours will have a direct effect on your own personal PR, just like how a company communicates with its audiences has a direct effect on business communication.
Deciding that today is the day to embrace PR is a decision I’ll support but the point is PR is everything you do, everything that came before, and everything you do in the future. With or without the support of a PR professional you are engaging in PR and giving out a PR message, and whether you’re aware or not you could have scuppered your communication plan before you consciously decide to implement it.
I’ll give you an example: many years ago during a networking event I was approached by an individual who claimed to be an expert in IT working for blue chip companies, he proudly proclaimed I should be contracting with him too for that very reason! Prior to my eyes glazing over I observed how he must have had an egg sandwich for his breakfast. His two sizes too small off-white shirt had dried egg yolk right at the point where his stomach was trying to break free from in between the buttons.
This was his PR message, what does it say to you?
